About Richmondhill    A Brief History

History of Oak Ridges

Oak Ridges is nestled onto the peak of the Oak Ridges Moraine
and is a high watershed area with terrific views of the city of Toronto.
When examining history, it's always entertaining to wonder about how things came about and connect some of the dots between the past and the present.  What were the events who were the people that came before us that shaped our world today?  Questions like, how did Oak Ridges get formed, what were the lives of the first settlers like, how long has the church down Yonge Street south of Stouffville Rd been there (St. John's Anglican), and who the heck was the guy Compte De Puisaye who's name is on a plaque down Yonge St?

You may not be aware of it, but in the Oak Ridges library, located on the East Side of Yonge, north of King Rd, is a book about the history of Oak Ridges.  The book is titled a "Salute to Canada", and was written by Sister M. Annette CPS, in 1967.  The author provides a remarkable perspective of the lives, events, and struggles of the early settlers in what is now Oak Ridges.  The book is an easy and entertaining story that at times was difficult to put down.  Even the list of business Patron's listed in the back of the book, many of which have long since disappeared, speaks of the shifting sands of time.
